What Is A Gas Stove And How Is It Used?

A gas stove is a device which utilizes fuel in its gaseous form to produce heat needed for cooking. The fuel used is usually Natural gas (NG). Alternatively, Propane and Liquefied Petroleum gas (LPG) are also used where NG is not available. But an emerging interest in renewable energy through gasification of Biomass is currently being developed.

The traditional stove top used wood as its fuel but the development of safer and more economical transportation of Natural gas in the 19th century ushered in the development of stove tops using combustible gas.

Before the industrialization of Europe, it was not uncommon for stoves to be made of stones or rough metal works such as cast iron. With the advent of industrialization, new designs and materials such as steel were made possible with the introduction of combustible gas such as its fuel instead of wood.

Today, unlike the unwieldy designs of the 19th and early 20th century, gas stove manufacturers offer not only utility in cooking but an added embellishment in a modern kitchen. And since most of the earlier problems of fuel combustion such as emission and heat control have already been solved by ingenious solutions thereby making them very much efficient, manufacturers vie for consumer interest by adding features for functionality and appearance. In fact, gas stoves range in design from the big to the small and are made of several materials to choose from to suit any kitchen room decoration. These include high gloss enamel painted metals to stone panel insets.

In operating a gas stove you simply turn on the knob corresponding to the burner you intend to use to the “lite” position. This will open the valve allowing gas fuel and air to mix and sent to the burner where an electric igniter or a standing pilot flame provides for the ignition. You then simply turn the knob to the specific intensity of the fire you need in your cooking. After cooking, simply turn the knob to the “off” position to extinguish the fire.

The proper maintenance of a gas stove will determine their longevity. A biennial servicing of your stove by a professional will ensure safety and a longer life for your appliance.
